Work is defined as (1):
“sustained physical or mental effort to overcome obstacles and achieve an objective or result.”
In most communities, a person’s work provides an income to pay for living expenses and recreational activities. It provides for them the basic necessities of life and a means to purchase products and services. The purpose of an individuals work has a much deeper meaning however.
The study of human needs shows that most people crave to perform work that honors their abilities, interests, and values. Most importantly, we want to feel that our work has deep meaning, that we are responding to a higher calling than the job description attached to our title (3, 4). We value this far more than status, power, or money (5).
