Trees Are Remarkable Plants
Thankfully, the principles that allow them to flourish are the same ones that allow you to as well.
Let’s take a closer look at the relationship between a tree and a person. Please select from the tabs below.
First, long before a tree can reach to the sky, a seed must devote most of it’s energy developing a strong root system. It’s roots become the invisible foundation to the rest of the tree that we observe above ground.
A seed must also be in an environment suitable for its growth. It needs to have solid ground in which to grow and to receiving adequate nourishment from the sun and soil. Without fulfilling these two needs, it could not blossom into the giant that it inevitably becomes.
Once the roots are firmly established in a nurturing environment, extensive trunk and branch growth can begin. This is the portion of the plant that we come to know above ground. It is revealing to observe that the most visible portion of a mature tree is its foliage. These shimmering, green appendages are the most attractive feature of the plant and, along with any flowers and fruit that it might bear, are the culmination of its work since birth. They are it’s crowning achievement.
You have much of the same requirements for growth as a young tree. To lead a rich and healthy life, you must firmly establish a network of roots. These roots are also unseen; they are your beliefs and core values. The most powerful and challenging way to improve your life is to intimately explore yours and decide where changes need to be made.
What do you want your life to look like?
Who do you want to become?
How must you change?
To fully develop, you must also place yourself in an environment suitable for your growth. The people, media, and culture that surround you have the power to magnify your progress or hold you back. A person with a powerful will can inhibit their growth substantially if they are unaware of the destructive influence of their environment. Conversely, a person of modest ambition can be thrust forward in their development when nurtured properly.
Once your new system of roots has been established in a nurturing environment, extensive visible growth can take place in your life as well. This will take the form of new actions and behaviors. You will begin to live in an authentically different way because you ARE different. You, and those closest to you, will see your life transform.
The crowning achievements in your life will also resemble those of the mature tree. A strong, lean, and supple body will become the fruit and foliage of your life. It will attract the most attention and prestige, but it is important to remember that it’s attainment would not have been possible without the sturdy roots on which it stands. Those roots start small, but with time, the proper guidance, and persistence vast networks will develop to support you.
To quote the great Taoist sage Laozi:
Begin difficult things when they are easy
Do great things when they are small
The difficult things of the world must once have been easy
The great things must once have been small
A thousand mile journey begins with one step
